Back to school means the DC suburbs are settling down and families are back in the “real” swing of things—and that also means it’s an incredible time to check out suburban life. Start with these activities and events, happening all weekend long.

Bethesda

The Bethesda Central Farm Market is from 9am-1:30pm on Sunday. Come out to enjoy live music, kids activities, local produce and chef demonstrations.

 

Arlington

The free Rosslyn Jazz Fest is 1pm-7pm on Saturday, featuring live music, local food trucks, a beer and wine garden and arts attractions.

 

Great Falls

Learn about Native American culture during the Virginia Native American Festival from 10am-4pm on Saturday. Admission is $8 in advance and includes kids activities, storytelling, arrow-shooting, crafts and more.

 

Southeast DC 

Revel in everything DC during the DC State Fair from 11am-7pm on Sunday. Families will enjoy a pet parade, hula hooping, a craft fair and exhibits featuring local agriculture and crafts.

 

Georgetown

Discover DC’s best gelato during the Gelato Festival Washington DC festival on Saturday and Sunday, which includes all-you-can-eat gelato with admission.

 

Alexandria

The George Washington Patriot Run is Sunday at 8am. Families are invited to participate in the event and a free Kids Fun Run.

 

Takoma Park

The Takoma Park Folk Festival is Sunday from 10:30am-6:30pm. Enjoy six stages of live music, 30+ craft vendors, games, food and lots of fun for kids. 

 

Kensington

Enjoy a free summer concert at Howard Avenue Park from 10am-11am on Saturday. The town’s farmers’ market will be taking place simultaneously. 

 

Rockville

The Pawpaw Festival is Saturday from 12pm-4pm. It’s free and includes live music, crafts, games and exhibits focused on the pawpaw fruit.

 

Vienna

Mr. Jon & Friends will be hosting a family concert at Jammin Java at 10:30am on Saturday. Tickets are $8/person.
