Explore the NYC Suburbs—From Your Car…

Posted on

You need to GET OUT for a few hours. These suburban drives are the perfect destination.

If you’re exploring the ‘burbs, these scenic drives are a great way to see a lot without getting out of the car, even. And if you do want to pull over and enjoy some fun, socially-distanced activities along the way? These routes offer plenty of opportunities to pull over, enjoy a quick picnic or even walk, hike and bike in some of the most beautiful spots in the area.

That, though, is just the beginning. If you’re ready to start exploring the NYC suburbs—or want to keep your research going—these drives weave through many popular commuter towns. Hop off the highway and see what you can see, or let your Suburban Jungle Strategist know and they’ll help you coordinate a super-targeted drive-through tour.

Enjoy!

Rt 287 to Tarrytown
Just 24 miles long, the strip of Rt 287 from the city to Tarrytown is one of the most beautiful anywhere. Wind through the Bronx, see the Hudson River from your car window, then head over the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Once you cross the bridge, it’s like you were never in the city—suddenly, you’ll be surrounded by a lush landscape dotted by historic mansions and gothic-inspired buildings in the distance. If you have the time, hop out at the Lyndhurst Mansion tour in Tarrytown. It’s the 18th century home of former NYC Mayor William Paulding and, later, railroad magnate Jay Gould. While tours aren’t running, the grounds are stunning and a great place to walk, run, or picnic.

Suburbs to explore along the way: Hastings-on-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, Ardsley, Irvington, Bronxville, Tuckahoe, Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow

Oyster Bay/Mill Neck
If you love the open water, this scenic drive through Long Island is for you. Head to Oyster Bay, traveling along the waterfront on West Shore Road. It’s a slower drive, but one that allows you to see lots of wildlife including deer, fox and swans.

Along this route, you’ll also drive through forests with dense, old trees. As you move along the shoreline, be sure to check out the historic Bayville mansions and 18th and early 19th-century architecture.

Once through the Mill Neck, expect winding roads along the water. It’s easy to spot boats, water birds, and more, even from the car.

Suburbs to explore along the way: Roslyn, Old Westbury, Jericho, Syosset, Oyster Bay

Henry Hudson Drive/Palisades State Park
For nature lovers, there’s nothing quite like the amazing views along the Hudson River. Follow Henry Hudson Drive to Palisades State Park, and up and over hills and twists. It’s a slow, meandering climb through the park, but totally worth it—with every turn you’ll see with dense greenery all around and, maybe, spot a few animals right from the car.

If it’s not too crowded, be sure to hop out and see the stone walls along the sides of the road—the views are outstanding.

While most people drive, hike, or walk here, if your family are truly advanced bikers, this is one of the best trails in the area. However, it’s not for beginners—and you don’t need a bike to truly enjoy the scenery here.

Suburbs to explore along the way: Fort Lee, Edgewater

Binney Pond, Greenwich
Take a loop around Binney Park in Greenwich—follow the path from Sound Beach Avenue and take Wesskum Wood Road, working your way around Binney Pond. It’s a short but very scenic trail that enables you to take in the historic charm of this popular suburb.

During your drive you’ll see century-old stone walls, towering trees, and several historic churches. One of these churches—the First Congregational Church—was founded in 1600 and is still active today.

Suburbs to explore along the way: New Rochelle, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Pelham, Harrison, Rye, Rye Brook, Greenwich
