Think the city has tons to do? Check out the Chicago suburbs for the best family-friendly fun.

There’s so much to do in the Chicago suburbs—especially in the fall. From food festivals to family art initiatives to tons of amazing seasonal markets, now is the time to get out and explore.

Barrington

Visit Pinot’s Palette to make a family mini canvas featuring a fully customizable unicorn from 12:30pm-2pm on Sunday. Admission is $18/painter.

Naperville

Don’t throw away your pumpkins—compost them at Camp Greene Wood from 5:30pm-8:30pm on Saturday. Hosted by the Girl Scouts but open to all, many families opt to enroll girls in grades K-12 during the event. Afterward, there will be a campfire with DIY caramel apples, a glow hike and crafts.

Wilmette

Saturday is the last day to visit the French Market in Wilmette for the season. It’s open from 8am-1pm and features local produce, meat, bread, flowers and is a great way to explore the town.

La Grange

Celebrate Dia de los Muertos by watching a free showing of “Coco” at 9am on Saturday at The LaGrange Theatre. The festivities are free and include face painting, free popcorn and a drink and Day of the Dead attractions. Register here.

Highland Park

Visit Heller Nature Center from 10am-11:30 on Saturday for Nature Playdates, a drop-in play group that has themed activities and a self-guided hike. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch.

Deerfield

Bach to Rock is hosting a musical petting zoo at St. Gregory’s Pumpkin Patch from 10am-12pm on Saturday. Stop by to see the animals, play with musical instruments and enter a drawing for free music lessons.

Northbrook

Celebrate cultural diversity at the North Suburban YMCA in Northbrook from 2pm-4pm on Sunday. There will be stations featuring cultural cuisine and holidays, treats and cultural performances.

Glenview

Compost your carved Halloween pumpkins at Flick Park from 1pm-2pm on Saturday. Families can have fun smashing them and learning about the benefits of composting. It’s free.
