5 Signs You’re Ready to Move to the Suburbs

Oct 21, 2024

Sound familiar? Then, it might be time to give Suburban Jungle a call.

City life can be electric, but let’s face it: at some point, even the most die-hard urbanites start feeling the itch to make a change. Maybe it’s because your once-cavernous apartment is suddenly claustrophobic, or you’re fantasizing about Saturday mornings at Home Depot instead of bottomless brunch. If this sounds familiar, you might be more ready for the suburbs than you think.

“We’ve spent years helping families transition from urban life to the suburbs. I can spot the telltale signs when someone is ready for that move,” says Patti Natiss, Suburban Jungle’s Head of National Strategy & Emerging Markets. “If you’re on the verge of saying goodbye to city life, there are clear signs that it might be time.”

Here are five unmistakable clues you’re ready to move to the suburbs:

1. Your once “huge” apartment is feeling anything but…

Remember when you first moved into that oversized two-bedroom? It felt palatial, right? There was room for everything—your massive sectional, a home office setup, and plenty of closet space. Fast forward a few years (and a few kids later), and it’s a different story.

“After baby number two arrives, a lot of people realize their so-called ‘spacious’ apartment just isn’t cutting it anymore,” says Patti. “Cribs, strollers, baby gear, and everything that comes with it—they start to take over.” Suddenly, the once-perfect layout is an obstacle course, and no amount of decluttering can make your space feel like it used to.

At this point, you’re likely ready for a backyard, a playroom, and—let’s be honest—a little breathing room. The suburbs offer space, and lots of it, without the insane real estate prices that would leave you living on ramen if you stayed in the city.

2. You’re finding more reasons to leave the city

Remember when everything you needed was within walking distance? Your go-to grocery store, favorite brunch spot, dry cleaner, and pharmacy were all just a few blocks away. But now, convenience has taken on a different meaning. Suddenly, you’re willing to drive 45 minutes just to shop at a Trader Joe’s, where there’s ample parking.

“When people start choosing weekend getaways to more suburban or rural areas, it’s usually a sign that they’re craving something different,” explains Patti. “If you find yourself saying things like, ‘It’s just easier to go to the Trader Joe’s outside the city,’ or ‘I want a weekend where I don’t have to deal with crowds,’ you’re probably already halfway out the door.”

Maybe you’re spending more time away from the city, planning weekend escapes or even quick trips to suburban shopping centers, events, and activities. If that sounds like you, it’s time to think about making that getaway permanent.

3. You’re no longer taking full advantage of what your city has to offer

The museums, the theater, the nightlife—when you first moved to the city, you were all about it. You loved the hustle, the energy, the idea that at any given moment, you could stumble upon something amazing. But now? You can’t remember the last time you saw a show or explored a new restaurant. In fact, when friends suggest meeting up in the city, your first thought is, “How far is it? Can I Uber there?”

“We see this all the time,” Patti says. “People love the idea of city life—the amenities, the culture—but then they realize they’re not actually using any of it anymore. Instead, they’re doing the same things every weekend: grabbing takeout from the same restaurant, binge-watching Netflix, and trying to avoid the crowds.”

When the excitement of city life starts to fade, and you’d rather chill out in your living room than go out and experience the action, that’s a sure sign the city may no longer fit your lifestyle. The suburbs offer an opportunity to embrace a different kind of energy that’s more focused on home, community, and creating experiences that don’t require hopping on the subway.

4. Your friends are heading OUT of the city

There’s no better indicator that it’s time to leave the city than when your social circle starts thinning out. One by one, your friends are heading to the suburbs, moving closer to family, or even to different parts of the country. Suddenly, the impromptu meetups and late-night dinners that defined your city life start to feel like a thing of the past.

“People tend to follow their tribe,” says Patti. “When your friends or family start moving to the suburbs, it often gets you thinking, ‘If they’re finding happiness and success outside the city, maybe I could too.’”

And let’s be real—weekend hangouts that used to be effortless now require more effort. Maybe you’re finding yourself traveling to visit friends in their new homes, where they’ve got a backyard, a guest room, and easy parking (jealous much?). As more of your crew leaves the city, the appeal of making the move yourself becomes even harder to ignore.

5. You’re ready for a different lifestyle

This one might be the most telling. At some point, your priorities start to shift. You dream of a home where you can entertain friends without worrying about noise complaints from the neighbors or squeezing everyone into your tiny living room. You start wondering what it would be like to have a yard for your kids to run around in or even—gasp!—a car.

“Ultimately, the decision to move to the suburbs comes down to lifestyle,” says Patti. “It’s about wanting more space, comfort, and control over your environment. People get to a point where they’re tired of the daily grind of city living—the commute, the noise, the crowds. They start thinking about the bigger picture: What kind of life do I want for myself and my family?”

If you’ve reached this stage, it’s clear that city life just isn’t giving you what you need anymore. You’re ready for a change, and the suburbs are calling your name.

What’s Next?

Moving to the suburbs isn’t about giving up city life—it’s about upgrading to a lifestyle that fits where you are now. More space, better schools, quieter streets, and community beyond the building lobby. It’s about having the freedom to do more without the constant hustle.
