Where to See the Best Autumn Leaves in the NYC Suburbs

Fall is officially here and it’s the perfect excuse to get out, explore the suburbs, and capture those postcard-worthy moments. From fire-red treetops in Westchester to golden canopies across Connecticut’s winding trails, this season is peak perfection for day-trippers, weekend wanderers, and families on the hunt for a little fall magic.

Here are some of our favorite places to catch the best foliage near New York City.

Westchester, NY

Old Croton Aqueduct (Dobbs Ferry & Croton-on-Hudson)

Stretching 20 miles from the Bronx to Cortlandt, this flat, tree-lined trail offers a serene leaf-peeping experience. It’s ideal for families, cyclists, strollers, and leashed pups. The foliage peaks in late October around Croton-on-Hudson, gradually drifting south, so you can go back more than once for a different view.

Kingsland Point Park & Eagle Hill, Rockefeller State Park Preserve (Sleepy Hollow)

Sleepy Hollow is famous for its Halloween lore, but this riverside town also delivers serious foliage. Head to Kingsland Point Park for sweeping Hudson River views, then make your way up Eagle Hill in Rockefeller State Park Preserve for panoramic vistas of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow wrapped in fall color.

Marshlands Conservancy (Rye)

Spanning 170 acres of woodlands, meadows, and salt marshes, this under-the-radar preserve offers more than three miles of trail, plus sightings of deer, birds, and even horseshoe crabs. Nature walks here feel like stepping into a fall storybook.

Bronx River Parkway Reservation (Bronxville)

This historic park follows the Bronx River and features footbridges, ponds, and mini waterfalls, all dressed in autumn’s finest. It’s especially popular with joggers and bikers, but don’t worry, there’s plenty of room to enjoy a peaceful walk among the changing leaves.

Whippoorwill Park Loop (Chappaqua)

Tucked away in Chappaqua, Whippoorwill is a peaceful escape with quiet trails that come alive in October. Pack a picnic and grab snacks from the nearby Whole Foods before you set off, then claim a bench and take in the view.

Long Island, NY

Planting Fields Arboretum (Oyster Bay)

Once a Gold Coast estate, this 400-acre arboretum is packed with tree-lined paths, gardens, and architecture that feels frozen in time. The fall colors are intense, and there’s often something happening on-site, from guided tours to seasonal events.

Clark Botanic Garden (Albertson)

Smaller but packed with charm, Clark is a hidden gem. In fall, its 12 acres come alive with color, especially around the rock and herb gardens. Time your visit with one of the garden’s yoga sessions or just come for a quiet stroll.

Sands Point Preserve (Port Washington)

With sweeping views of the Long Island Sound and sprawling trails through former Guggenheim land, this 216-acre preserve feels cinematic. The Gatsby vibes are strong—and so are the fall colors.

New Jersey

South Mountain Reservation (Maplewood, Millburn & West Orange)

With over 2,000 acres of trails, waterfalls, and overlooks, South Mountain is a must for fall lovers. The Hemlock Falls trail is an easy route for families, complete with deer sightings and the whimsical Fairy Trail for younger explorers.

Palisades Interstate Park (Alpine)

Known for its dramatic cliffs and postcard-perfect views of the Hudson River, this 2,500-acre park features more than 30 miles of trails. Peak color hits in late October—and the views from the top are worth every step.

Tamaques Reservation (Westfield)

If you’re based in or near Westfield, this local favorite offers a quick and convenient dose of autumn. Walking trails, pickleball courts, and family-friendly spaces make it a laid-back way to enjoy the changing season.

Connecticut

Greenwich Audubon Center (Greenwich)

This 285-acre sanctuary offers vibrant colors alongside meadows, swamps, and apple trees. Don’t miss the boardwalk around Lake Loop Trail—reflections of red, gold, and orange leaves on the water are pure magic.

Irwin Park (New Canaan)

Well-manicured and filled with mature trees, Irwin Park is a fall picnic dream. Daffodil-lined paths wind through the grounds, and the Great Lawn is a beautiful spot to relax or snap a family photo.

Mianus River Park (Stamford)

A fall favorite for both humans and pups, Mianus River Park covers nearly 400 acres and offers riverside hikes, mountain biking trails, and fishing spots. It’s a perfect destination for a full-day fall adventure, especially if you catch one of the community-hosted events.
