The city isn’t the only spot with endless options for a night out
One of the biggest questions families ask when they start exploring the suburbs is surprisingly simple: What do suburban date nights look like?
For many New Yorkers, evenings out are a big part of city life – trying new restaurants, grabbing cocktails, seeing a show, or wandering into an unexpected spot for dessert. But good news: many NYC suburbs have serious date night scenes of their own. Even better news: you won’t experience the same Manhattan-level chaos while still experiencing everything you want in a night out, from amazing food and drinks to plenty of things to see and do. Here are a few towns where that’s especially true.
Rye, NY
Rye is the kind of town where date night feels relaxed but still special, with most of the action centered along Purchase Street. Start with a cocktail at Antique Garage Rye, a Mediterranean restaurant and bar known for its lively atmosphere and shareable plates inspired by Aegean cuisine. From there, walk over to Oko, a dinner spot serving Japanese dishes like sushi and robata-grilled meats and seafood. It’s one of the town’s most popular reservations for couples.
Finish the night the way many Rye locals do: with a cone from Longford’s Ice Cream, where the line often spills onto the sidewalk on warm evenings.
Westport, CT
Westport has one of the most developed dining scenes in Fairfield County, with restaurants clustered around Main Street and the Saugatuck area. Couples often start with drinks at The Whelk, a modern seafood restaurant from chef Bill Taibe known for oysters and coastal dishes. Dinner options nearby include Kawa Ni, a popular Asian-inspired noodle bar, or Felice Westport, the Tuscan-style Italian restaurant that recently expanded from New York City.
If you want to extend the night, there’s usually something happening nearby, like a show at the Westport Country Playhouse or, weather permitting, an outdoor concert at the Levitt Pavilion along the Saugatuck River.
Stamford, CT
If you want something closest to city energy, Stamford delivers. Downtown has a lively restaurant scene that makes it easy to build a full evening out, starting with dinner at Divina, known for its warm atmosphere and Modern Italian menu, or grabbing tacos and margaritas at the always-busy bartaco.
For something a little more scenic, head toward the waterfront. The Wheel offers coastal New England fare with harbor views, while Fortina at Harbor Point pairs its popular wood-fired pizzas with a fun, energetic vibe that feels perfect for a casual date night.
And if your evening calls for a classic nightcap, The Americano is a go-to for martinis in a stylish setting — an easy last stop before calling it a night.

Montclair, NJ
Montclair’s restaurant scene feels closest to Brooklyn – dense, creative, and constantly evolving. Date nights often start at places like Halcyon, a stylish seafood and sushi restaurant with a strong cocktail program, or Turtle + the Wolf, known for inventive American dishes and a cozy neighborhood vibe. After dinner, couples often head to the Wellmont Theater for concerts or catch a screening through the Montclair Film community events.
Because everything clusters around Bloomfield Avenue and Church Street, it’s one of the easiest suburban places to park once and wander.
Huntington, NY
On Long Island’s North Shore, Huntington’s Main Street is one of the most vibrant restaurant corridors outside NYC. Prime – An American Kitchen & Bar, a waterfront restaurant overlooking Huntington Harbor, and Besito, known for its upscale Mexican cuisine, are popular go-to’s for drinks and dinner. After, the night often continues at The Paramount, a concert venue that regularly hosts major touring artists. On warm evenings, Main Street stays busy with people moving between restaurants, bars, and music venues.
Summit, NJ
Summit’s downtown is compact but packed with restaurants. The Wine List, a cozy wine bar, is perfect for date night. Another favorite is Roots Steakhouse, one of the area’s most popular upscale restaurants, or Due 360, a stylish Italian spot. Because everything sits within a few blocks of the train station, the whole evening feels walkable and easy – park once, and you’re set.
The Suburban Date Night Scene
What many city families discover after moving is that date nights don’t disappear. They just shift. Instead of crossing boroughs, you park once and walk through downtown. Instead of fighting for reservations weeks in advance, you run into neighbors grabbing drinks at the same restaurant you love. And sometimes, that version of going out feels even easier, and just as much fun.
