Outdoor Entertaining, Reimagined: From Balconies to Full Backyards

Another reason summer is easier in suburbia…

When families start talking to us about moving to the suburbs, the conversation usually begins with the obvious details: schools, commutes, walkability, and overall vibe, for starters. But one of the lifestyle changes families often overlook is how much easier it becomes to gather, host, and spend time with other people when you have outdoor space that’s actually designed for it.

Socializing in the city versus the suburbs

Think about entertaining in the city – and how it almost always revolves around logistics. You meet friends for dinner, you make a reservation, and you coordinate schedules, figuring out who can get there by seven and who’s (probably) running late from work. If you’re hosting at home, you’re probably doing a little mental math before anyone arrives, trying to figure out how many people can realistically fit around the table and whether there are enough chairs to go around. None of this feels unusual when you’re living it – it’s just part of city life.

Then you move to the suburbs and notice that your house starts becoming a place where people naturally gather. At first, it’s usually because everyone wants to see the new place. Friends come by, family visits, and neighbors pop over to introduce themselves. Before long, casual get-togethers start taking shape. Kids grab a soccer ball or head for the swing set while adults settle in with coffee, cocktails, or whatever happens to be on hand.

Many families notice the shift during one of their first backyard gatherings. People spread out naturally. Some settle on the patio, others gather around the grill, and the kids disappear into the yard. For the first time, you’re not trying to fit everyone into a single room or manage every square foot of space.

That’s when suburban outdoor entertaining really starts to feel different. Hosting becomes less of an occasion and more a part of everyday life. Maybe you run into a neighbor at a baseball game and end up planning a backyard BBQ for that evening, or a friend drops by, and all of the kids hop in the pool while you order a few pizzas. No one planned it weeks in advance, it just happens.

The benefits of a backyard

For families with young kids, this shift becomes even more noticeable. Parents who move from apartments often don’t realize how much energy goes into managing shared space until they don’t have to anymore. In a city apartment, everyone occupies the same space. Adults are trying to have a chat while kids are bouncing from couch to couch. Parents spend so much of the gathering acting as referees, entertainers, and traffic controllers.

But having an outdoor space in suburbia changes everything. Parents can hang on the patio while kids play nearby. Everyone is still together, and nothing feels forced. The backyard becomes an extension of daily life rather than a separate place reserved for entertaining.

It also leads to conversations you likely never thought about before – namely, conversations about backyard furniture. In the city, you may have had a small balcony to outfit but, now, you’re suddenly comparing materials, cushions, and weather resistance, weighing the pros and cons of fire pits and smokers, and considering where exactly to hang the string lights. Entire friendships are formed around comparing backyard upgrades and debating pizza ovens and mosquito-control strategies. Because once people start spending meaningful time outside, they naturally invest in the spaces where those moments happen.

What’s interesting, though, is that very few families remember the furniture. They don’t remember which grill they bought or when they finally upgraded the patio. What they remember are the fun, low-key summer nights. That’s what we think about when we talk about outdoor entertaining with our clients. The backyard itself is almost incidental – our clients love the connection.

So while you might not begin your suburban search with outdoor entertaining top-of-mind, it’s definitely worth considering. Because once you move, you’ll have so many more opportunities to invite friends and loved ones in, to relax, connect, and enjoy this time of year. And for many families, that’s one of the most meaningful lifestyle changes that comes with making the move.
