Suburban Jungle Local Annie Davidson loves La Grange’s annual Easter tradition!
We started our town search five years ago, before Suburban Jungle opened in the Chicago market. Our small family of three (now five!) threw a dart at the wall, took the suburban leap and landed in La Grange Park, which I affectionately refer to as Mayberry. We were lucky that the neighborhood we chose, Harding Woods, is full of young families, go-getters, adventure seekers and all-around fun residents.
Having no local family or connection to the area put us on alert that first year, we were hungry to find our niche. But discovering how warm this community is happened by no accident, this neighborhood is fostered by families who love creating incredible memories.
That’s where this egg hunt tradition comes in. La Grange and surrounding areas have countless large-scale fantastic hunts that bring in hundreds of families. They can be equated to the running of the bulls, so to speak.
Every year, each family contributes two to three dozen eggs, with Dads dropping them 30 minutes prior to the event. Kids are released in waves so the littlest egg hunters have a chance to “win.” Big kids wrap up the hunt and everyone digs into a breakfast buffet afterward.
This past year the turnout was better than ever! This low-maintenance event remained an amazing venue to socialize with other families, who feel like they’re a part of something bigger.
The spirit of inclusion and celebration of these little milestones is alive and well in Harding Woods. Be sure to check out this neighborhood in La Grange Park if you’re on the hunt in the Chicago suburbs! Not Easter? There’s always something going on. La Grange Business Association hosts an annual Girlfriends’ Getaway in late April, followed by the kickoff of the town farmers market which, this year, happens May 9. Then in June, it’s the La Grange Pet Parade, packed with tons of furry, four-legged residents and their families. It’s always a great time!
