These Chicago Suburbs Keep Getting HOTTER

Jan 7, 2020

These towns keep getting more and more popular, especially with city families looking to make a move.

The Chicago suburbs have always been HOT, especially among young families looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city living. The best part? In this area, it’s easy to find a sub-60 minute commute, ensuring families can easily work in the city post-move—and, even, ensure their kids have access to the arts, culture, food and other global experiences happening in the city. It’s a win/win.

That said, while some of the most popular Chicago suburbs will always be must-sees for young families, we’re constantly seeing go-to towns shift.

“Families’ priorities change,” explains Suburban Jungle Head Chicago Strategist Heather Jagher. “And besides that, there are definite market shifts—schools change, communities change. With those changes, families start exploring other towns—and, suddenly, those towns start getting more and more popular.”

Heather has seen this over and over—and, as a result, she’s always got an eye on the emerging hot towns as well as what communities she’s seeing gain momentum among her city families.

#1. Mount Prospect

“Right now,” Heather says, “I’m seeing a big swing towards Mount Prospect. Lots of local chefs are opening amazing restaurants in the area, which is very appealing to city families—and really changes the dynamics of a town.” Mount Prospect, she adds, is very central and very easy to not just the city but other key areas in and around Chicago.

“It’s an incredibly easy commute,” Heather says. “You can just jump on the L, which is pretty close. Families are also very close to O’Hare—if one or both parents travel for work, that’s a plus.” She also notes that Mount Prospect’s downtown is growing very quickly, with lots of new construction and a wide variety of home types on and about to hit the market. “There’s something for everyone—and, if not, it’s probably in the works!” The town was also recently rated one of the safest communities in America.

#2. Downers Grove

Another emerging hotspot, Heather adds, is Downers Grove. “It’s in a great spot,” she explains, “right between two very name brand towns, Naperville and Schaumburg. So families immediately have access to those communities and their parks, amenities, restaurants, shopping and entertainment,” while getting more for their money property-wise, all in a tight-knit community with strong schools.

“It’s about 20 miles outside of Chicago,” Heather says, “and is a very easy commute.” And Heather isn’t alone in her assessment—in 2018, Sperling named Downers Grove one of the 100 best places to live, citing its award-winning public schools, scenic downtown packed with 70+ shops and restaurants, plus lots of options for nightlife and entertainment.

“They also have a Tree City USA designation,” adds Heather, “because of the village’s two forest preserves and amazing parks. It’s a great place to get out and be out, with your family.”
