Apr 12, 2019

With the Golden State Warriors at the top of the game, world’s fastest swimmers and NFL stars from the Bay Area, what kid doesn’t want to be an athlete? Sports are big here and can become a key decision maker for families when moving from the city to less urban areas in the East Bay.

So what East Bay spots are hot for athletics? Let’s dive into it:

Lafayette, Moraga & Orinda

Acalanes High School in Moraga has a long list of varsity teams, from baseball, basketball, cross-country, lacrosse (a newcomer that is growing very fast in popularity), soccer, water polo and more. Miramonte High School in Orinda has a strong football team and their girl’s soccer team is going strong in the State Championships.

Campolino High School in Lafayette, home of the Cougars, competes in the Diablo Athletic League, the North Coast Section, and the California Interscholastic Federation. Campolino’s football team has been to State Championships multiple years in a row, it’s cross-country, water polo and volleyball team are leading the 2018/2019 Diablo League.

Walnut Creek

Walnut Creek’s Northgate Broncos from the Northgate High School are proud of having a strong soccer team. Walnut Creek’s devotion to sports overall is tangible. Soccer is popular with over 20 fields available, baseball goes strong, and don’t forget about its year around swimming options.

If you are looking into US Masters Swimming programs, Walnut Creek has one of the best in the country. This is for 18 years and older, mainly with some background in competitive swimming. Walnut Creek Soccer Club, Walnut Creek Youth Athletic Association (flag football, basketball, t-ball, baseball, softball, summer soccer), Walnut Creek Little League, and Adult Softball operate sports leagues throughout the City. You can find more details here.

Monte Vista High School, home of the Mustang League, offers a broad variety of freshman, junior varsity and varsity level sports. And they do focus a lot on positive and balanced coaching and are part of the PCA (Positive Coaching Association).

They are a member of the California Interscholastic Federation and the East Bay Athletic League, with a long tradition of numerous league and North Coast Section championships. Mustang Soccer League in Danville is well known for its superb soccer culture and is a member of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, a top tier of soccer in the U.S.

De La Salle High School has one of the top football programs in the country. Home of the Spartans, De La Salle has produced many top NFL players. Just have a look at the top 15.

Last year’s Women Team Rankings for the NCS Swimming and Diving 2018 Championships – out of overall 40 teams — Monte Vista landed first place, followed by Campolino second, Miramonte third and Alcalanes fourth. This says a lot about these East Bay spots.

Having a strong athletic focus can be a stabilizing pillar for families. Sports keep our youngsters focussed, motivated, teach them first hand about teamwork and good sportsmanship. Living in an area that lives and breathes this culture is an invaluable asset.
