Family-Friendly Outdoor Adventures to Enjoy This Fall in the San Francisco Bay Area

Oct 17, 2025

Fall in the Bay Area is one of the best times to get outside. The summer fog lifts, the weather stays mild, and everything feels a little calmer,  perfect for family adventures. Whether your crew loves to hike, bike, explore history, or just enjoy the season’s colors, here are a few favorite ways to make the most of fall outdoors.

Whatever your needs, your Suburban Jungle Strategist will help you take a town-first approach to find the perfect fit!

Explore the Marin Headlands

The Marin Headlands, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, offers everything from ocean views to Cold War history. Families can hike down to Black Sands Beach, check out the restored Nike Missile Site, or stop at the Marine Mammal Center to learn about local wildlife. It’s a great spot for kids who love exploring and parents who appreciate a little adventure mixed with stunning views.

Take in Fall Colors at Tilden Park

On the East Bay side, Tilden Regional Park in Berkeley is one of the few places in the Bay Area where you can see real fall foliage. The mix of oak, maple, and eucalyptus trees gives the park a warm, golden glow this time of year. Kids love the Little Farm, a small petting zoo where they can feed goats and sheep, and the Redwood Valley Railway, a miniature steam train that winds through the park. Both are timeless fall favorites for local families.

Get Lost in a Corn Maze in the Tri-Valley Area

For a classic fall outing, head east to G&M Farms in Livermore in the Tri-Valley area, home to rolling hills, family farms, and one of the best corn mazes around. Families love visiting the local pumpkin patches, picking out the perfect pumpkin, and tackling the winding maze paths that make for the ultimate seasonal adventure. It’s a fun way to spend a fall afternoon and explore the family-friendly Tri-Valley suburbs at the same time.

Bike or Hike in the Peninsula’s Open Spaces

The Peninsula and South Bay are filled with protected open spaces that make it easy to escape into nature without going far. Head to Purisma Creek Redwoods Preserve or Huddart Park in Woodside for shaded trails, or explore the scenic routes from San Bruno to Woodside along Crystal Springs Reservoir for family biking. For ocean views, the Half Moon Bay Coastside Trail offers gentle terrain perfect for strollers and younger riders.

Enjoy the Beaches Without the Fog

Fall is actually one of the best times to visit Bay Area beaches. With the fog gone and the crowds thinned, it’s the perfect time for a coastal picnic or a long beach walk. Families love Half Moon Bay State Beach, Pacifica State Beach, and Stinson Beach for easy access and wide, sandy stretches. Just bring layers — the Pacific breeze is part of the experience.

And while you’re in Half Moon Bay, check out the famous Art & Pumpkin Festival on historic Main Street. Each October, this local tradition celebrates the season with pumpkin-themed treats, live music, family activities, and the chance to see some truly giant gourds. It’s one of the Bay Area’s most beloved fall festivals, and the perfect coastal day trip.
