Forget the City: These Northern NJ Suburbs Are a Foodie’s Dream

Oct 22, 2025

In our “should we stay or go?” strategy sessions, one topic comes up again and again: food.

More specifically: Will we have to drive into the city for a great dinner?

The short answer: absolutely not. Northern New Jersey’s restaurant scene is not only thriving, it’s become a magnet for big-name chefs and bold new concepts. Clients often tell us they’re looking for neighborhoods with top-tier schools, easy commutes and restaurants that rival their city favorites. Think: Michelin-level tasting menus, a proper latte, or a quick bite with zero compromise on flavor or vibe.

And the suburbs deliver.

New & Noteworthy

These are the newest names in Northern NJ foodie suburbs, and they’re already drawing crowds, critics, and city transplants alike.

MM by Morimoto – Montclair
Yes, that Morimoto. The Iron Chef opened this sleek, intimate sushi bar in Montclair—and it’s already one of the most coveted reservations around. A major win for Northern NJ’s fine dining scene.

The Saint Claire – Montclair

Right on bustling Church Street, The Saint Claire is Montclair’s newest hotspot for all-day dining and late-night buzz. With chic interiors, a lively bar scene, and a coveted outdoor patio, it’s drawing locals and out-of-towners alike. Reservations fill up fast so plan ahead to see what all the buzz is about.

Willow & Whisk – Millburn
This Wyckoff favorite just opened a second location in downtown Millburn, and it’s packed from breakfast through brunch. Expect top-tier eggs, toasts, pancakes, and an elevated vibe, perfect for fueling up before a soccer game or after preschool drop-off.

Eataly – Short Hills
The famed Italian marketplace finally crossed the river. At its luxe Short Hills outpost, you’ll find restaurants, fresh pasta stations, a wine bar, espresso counter, and rows of imported Italian staples. Equal parts eatery and experience.

Lula – Ridgewood
Stylish and ingredient-driven, Lula brings a modern sensibility to Ridgewood with creative comfort food, a rotating seasonal menu, and a minimalist interior that feels more downtown Manhattan than Bergen County.

Maize – Westfield
Bold Latin American flavors meet high-end technique at Maize, one of the most talked-about new openings in Union County. The menu is upscale, the cocktails are standout, and the plating is pure art.

Local Hotspots with a Cult Following

Across these Northern NJ foodie suburbs, locals have their go-to favorites they’ll recommend again and again.

Lunello – Cedar Grove
Think white tablecloths, candlelight, and perfect pasta. Lunello nails the traditional Italian experience and remains one of the area’s most popular special occasion spots.

Lithos – Livingston
Upscale Greek with refined Mediterranean flavors and a modern, whitewashed interior. The seafood is fresh, the dips are housemade, and the wine list is top-tier.

Faubourg – Montclair
Chic, energetic, and effortlessly French. Faubourg combines brasserie classics with serious culinary chops, plus an outdoor terrace that’s perfect for cocktails or Sunday brunch.

Rails Steakhouse – Montville
Hidden behind a vintage train station facade is one of NJ’s most talked-about steakhouses. Rails is known for its dry-aged steaks, speakeasy-style whiskey bar, and moody atmosphere.

Summit House – Summit
Seasonal, sustainable, and stunning. Summit House balances a warm, rustic vibe with a modern American menu that draws crowds for brunch, date night, and everything in between.

Old Standbys (Still Worth the Hype)

These spots have been holding it down for years, and they’re just as good now as they were then.

Belmont Tavern – Bloomfield
Come for the “Chicken Savoy,” stay for the shrimp beeps, fried hot peppers, and authentic Jersey-Italian vibes.

Nero’s Grille – Livingston
Spacious and welcoming, Nero’s serves up traditional steaks, seafood, and pastas with consistently high marks—and a nightly bar scene.

Basilico – Millburn
A reliable neighborhood staple for traditional Italian, housemade pastas, and cozy family dinners. Perfect for regular rotation.

Egan & Sons – Montclair
Classic pub fare with a twist. Egan’s pours a perfect pint, serves a great burger, and feels like a proper city bar dropped into the heart of suburbia. The outdoor patio is a social scene three seasons of the year.

Fiorino – Summit
Warm hospitality and elevated Italian cuisine in a charming, downtown setting. Ideal for a midweek dinner or weekend celebration.
