Lake Travis Towns
Tons of Austin’s suburbs surround Lake Travis, a man-made reservoir with more than 270 miles of shoreline. And what makes for a better summer day than cooling off on the water? There are so many family-friendly ways to enjoy the lake from sailing to scuba-diving.
Lake Travis residents also have access to a unique water park right in their backyard. Bring the kids to Waterloo Adventures for a day of jumping on floating trampolines and gliding down jumbo slides. Lakeway
If you’re all about spending summer on the water, you’ll also love Lakeway. Another Lake Travis neighborhood, which means you have opportunities for boating, sailing, and waterskiing right in your backyard.
In town, there’s the Swim Center where kids can take lessons. And for mom and dad? Dive right in — or lounge by the water with a good book and cold drink. Spicewood
Spicewood is a charming Lake Travis neighborhood with a low-key vibe residents love. That doesn’t mean Spicewood is sleepy, though. Especially in the summer, this community comes to life. Cool off at one of Krause Springs’ 32 pools or book a campsite here for a memorable “staycation.” And residents know that 5 Soul Wine Co is the place to meet up with friends. This sprawling 10-acre winery hosts yoga sessions, painting classes, food trucks, and more on its large lawn. They even have pickleball courts and a playground for the kids.
Dripping Springs
Twenty-five miles outside of Austin, Dripping Springs calls itself the “Gateway to Hill Country.” Locals spend summer days exploring the area’s natural wonders, dancing to live music, playing mini-golf with the kids, and more.
After working up an appetite, many families head to Sidecar, a kid-friendly winery in downtown Dripping Springs (bonus: there’s live music most weekends). And don’t forget about Dreamland, a 64-acre entertainment venue packed with mini-golf, summer camps, concerts plus a great selection of local refreshments in the beer garden.
Pflugerville
True to its roots, this Austin suburb hosts an annual German fest that draws families from all over the area, all ready to eat, drink, and enjoy the weather. This, though, is just one of many family-friendly festivals Pflugerville hosts during the summer. And when they aren’t hanging at a fun, seasonal event? Expect to spot friends and neighbors at Pfluger Park for outdoor concerts and fishing contests on Lake Pflugerville.
Pflugerville is also home to Typhoon Texas Waterpark, a huge summer destination. Consider getting a season pass so you can float down the lazy river and race down water slides all summer long.
South Austin
South Austin is an up-and-coming area that locals say gives a “taste of Old Austin.” Even if you don’t live in this part of town, you can easily take advantage of all the summer fun it has to offer. Start by packing up the crew and bringing them to Meanwhile Brewing Co. Here, Austin parents can grab a beer or low-proof cocktail while the kids run around the playground. There’s even a soccer field and a stage for live music.
