Why We Love Contra Costa County

Feb 25, 2022

There’s a town for everyone in the East Bay Suburbs.

With its welcoming vibe, top-notch schools, and easy access to the city, what’s not to love about Contra Costa County? Whether you’re still looking for a bustling city feel (hello, Walnut Creek) or craving the small-town perks of Orinda and Alamo, the East Bay suburbs offer something for everyone. And that’s exactly what we love about this popular spot. But that’s just the beginning…

#1. It’s a Great Place to Raise a Family

Contra Costa County is an amazing place for families. There are tons of ways to get involved from local sports leagues to school events and more. These towns are very welcoming — check out the Mt Diablo Mothers’ Club for starters. Plus, when you want to plan a family-friendly getaway, you’re just a short drive from the beach, ski resorts, and redwood forests.

Contra Costa County is also home to some of the highest-ranking districts in the area, each promoting innovative curriculums and diverse extracurriculars. Take Tice Creek, for example. Students at this Walnut Creek school become critical thinkers through Project-Based Learning (PBL).

#2. There Are Lots of Opportunities for Sporty Kids

If there’s an athlete in your crew, Contra Costa County is the place to be. Sports are big here and kids can join a number of different teams through their school. Soccer, football, cross country, and swimming are especially popular but lacrosse, water polo, basketball, and baseball programs are also offered through most public schools. Community rec leagues are available in many towns so adults can get in on the fun, too.

For more competitive athletes, there’s the U.S. Swimming Masters Program in Walnut Creek and the Mustang Soccer League in Danville, a member of the elite U.S. Soccer Development Academy.

#3. Outdoor Fun for All Ages

You don’t have to be a top-tier athlete to enjoy an active lifestyle in Contra Costa County. There are plenty of outdoor spots including parks, playgrounds, and trails to satisfy any adventurer. Walnut Creek’s Heather Farm Park feature some of the most colorful (and kid-approved) play spaces around. And on sunny days, the splash park in San Ramon’s Central Park is hard to beat.

There are also miles of trails that cut across these towns just waiting to be explored. Hop on your bike or lace up your hiking shoes and tackle the Iron Horse Trail, a 32-mile region trail that’s perfect for all skill levels. For a shorter, but just as scenic, ride, check out the Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail. This multi-use path is just under eight miles but connects to local parks and other hiking trails. And with its pleasant Mediterranean climate, you can really take advantage of these Contra Costa County trails year-round.

#4. The Top-Notch Food Scene

City families can be a bit hesitant about the dining options in the suburbs. We get it. When you’re coming from the world-renowned food scene in San Francisco, it seems like nothing will compare. But once you dig in you might be surprised by what you find. There’s a Michelin-recognized bistro in Lafayette and tons of sensational local faves, like LITA or Dumpling Hours, that draw long lines from local foodies. And Concord locals can get a taste of the world without leaving town. From Burmese dishes at Aung MayLiKa to Latin American sweets at Casa de Alfajor, there are tons of family-owned local restaurants to satisfy almost any craving.

Home chefs can stock up on fresh, organic produce at the Danville and San Ramon farmers markets. Not only are these the best places to find farm-fresh seasonal ingredients, but you can connect with other foodies while listening to live music or waiting in line at one of the market’s food trucks.

#5. One Word: Shopping

No matter what you’re in the market for, you’ll find it easily in Contra Costa County. Danville is packed with local boutiques, like Lemon and Cottage Jewel for home goods and Flaunt Boutique or Ella J for fashionistas. Nearby Walnut Creek also boasts boutiques including Wish, a one-stop-shop for curated gifts, and Five Little Monkeys for creative, sustainable kids toys.

There’s plenty of name-brand retail, too. Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek is home to upscale favorites like Lululemon, Kendra Scott, Madewell, and more. And errands are a breeze with Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Target, and Home Depot locations scattered around the county.
