Find Your Farmers Market Personality—Then Find Your Dallas Farmers Market!

Mar 26, 2019

Every season brings a wealth of locally grown produce to the market in North Texas—literally, and there’s no better place to find it than the eclectic Dallas farmers’ market scene. Here, each farmers market has a character as unique as the cities’ 4.5 million inhabitants.

Stalls bursting with brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale, cauliflower and vibrant blooms mean spring has sprung in Dallas, followed by rich harvests of peaches, tomatoes, cucumbers and berries in summer, and cabbage, beans and other hearty favorites in fall. And that’s not to mention greenhouse-grown produce, artisan jams, organic meats and cheese and farm-fresh eggs.

No matter the season, it’s easy to find fresh produce and a fun-filled afternoon in Dallas; you just have to know where to look. Either make it your mission to explore the city’s 40+ markets, or use this list to find the best one for you.

If you LOVE local and will only buy in-season…

When what you put in your body matters as much as the environmental footprint you leave behind, and you want local peaches, berries and meat right from the farm – think Hippos and Hashbrowns, Wolfsong Farm and Latte Da Dairy, — Good Local’s producer-only White Rock Farmers Market is the way to go. Since 67% of Good Local farmers solely rely on the market for their income, shopping here is a great way to support local growers.

Grab the best local, seasonal produce Saturdays March – December from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at 9150 Garland Road in Dallas.

If you want to get your hands dirty and scoop up local goodies…

Since the late 1800s, farmers have gathered at the corner of South Pearl Expressway and Cadiz Street in downtown Dallas to peddle produce, livestock and farm-fresh meat. The Dallas Farmers Market was officially established in 1941, and since evolved into a sprawling hub for gardening demos, cooking classes, fresh seafood and artisanal goods at The Market and 100% locally grown fruits and veggies at The Shed.

The Market is open year-round, 7 days/week from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm. The Shed is open Saturdays 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Sundays 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and select Fridays 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.

If family fun is #1 but fresh produce sounds good, too…

Run by Coppell Community Garden since 2003, the Coppell Farmers Market is widely touted as one of the region’s best all-around markets for locally grown produce (Patrick Embry and Weathertop Farm, to name a couple), candles at Abundantly Aromatic, fresh-cut flowers and fun activities the kiddos will love. Its vendors are required to live within 150 miles of the market, and often show up with tomatoes, peaches, berries and seasonal picks gathered the same day.

Hitting the market with the stroller in tow is a cinch, and your kids will appreciate the chance to run and play on the market’s playground and water feature. Plan to arrive before 10:30 am for Garden Time for Kids! The market at 768 W. Main Street is open Saturdays 8:00 am – 12:00 pm.

If all artisan all the time is what you seek…

Whether you have a hunkering for gluten-free Brazilian cheese bread, homemade Italian pasta and desserts or frozen dog treats, you’ll find the artisanal delights you crave at St. Michael’s Saturdays 8:00 am to 12:00 am at 8011 Douglas Ave.

From stocks and broths at Stocks & Bondy to authentic Greek yogurt and pastries at Yiayia’s Greek Bakery, St. Michael’s has Dallas’ most diverse selection of locally produced jams, jellies, bread, meat, cheese, art, candles, dog treats and food truck-style delicacies. This is one stop for everyone’s bucket list.

If you want to dance under the stars while buying berries…

Beat the hot sun and plan your next date night at Farmers Branch Market– now open Saturdays 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Get a sitter and hit the market for live music, food trucks, picnic tables and lux frozen wine pops – or bring the kids and show them how to kick up the dust Dallas-style.

While you’re there, stock up on fresh produce from Fisher Family Farm and Ranch, La Esperanza Farm, artisan pastries and bread from El Cafecito and pickled vegetables, jams and jellies from State Fair of Texas award winner Designs by Diana! Find it at 12700 Denton Drive.
