Montclair Pride 2024: Celebrating Community

Jun 3, 2024

One of the biggest pride celebrations is happening in Montclair this week

Whether you live in Montclair, NJ, are exploring this dynamic community, or just looking for an amazing way to spend a day in the New Jersey suburbs, we’ve got you covered – because this Saturday, June 8, is Montclair Pride 2024.

All month long, this community-first ‘burb is celebrating what makes their town so special, and they’re inviting everyone to come and participate right alongside them. Check out what’s happening at this celebration of LBGTQ+ pride and pride in the Montclair community as a whole.

The main event: Pride 2024

Montclair Pride isn’t just your average Pride festival. It’s a movement that fosters inclusivity, acceptance, and love for all. And this year, it’s set to be an unforgettable celebration right in the heart of downtown Montclair – and hosted by Shi Queeta Lee, the first ever drag queen to perform at the White House and a fixture on Drag City:DC.

In 2023, Montclair Pride welcomed over 26,500 attendees and this time around it’s gearing up to be even bigger and better, including three stages packed with performances ranging from local talent to Broadway legends, celebrities, and noted speakers, starting at 12pm.

But that’s just the beginning during this jam-packed day of music, dance, spoken word, and plenty to do, see, eat, and experience. Between live performances, drag queen storytimes, and musical guests, attendees can check out the sponsor village showcasing LGBTQ+-owned businesses, artisans, community organizations, and a mouth-watering array of food trucks and vendors—more than 200 vendors in all. Plus, resource booths will be on hand to share vital information on LGBTQ+ issues and services throughout the event.

With street closures spanning Bloomfield Avenue, Park Street, and more, our locals recommend arriving early and getting ready to dance and celebrate through the night – Montclair Pride is known for its evening dance party. This year, DJ Vito will be spinning classic dance music and new favorites from 6pm to 9pm, wrapping the event.

More Pride events happening all month long

The big event, though, is just a piece of the Pride festivities happening in Montclair. On June 6 from 6pm-8pm, Montclair Bread is hosting Doughnuts + Drag. During this family-friendly event, participants will have a chance to decorate their own doughnut, with local drag queens onsite to lend a hand. Designed to foster a welcoming atmosphere for queer-positive families and allies, this event is always a sell-out – so get your tickets now!

After creating your sugary masterpiece, head to the Union Congregational Church for a free concert, “The Rainbow Screen,” a celebration of cinematic favorites written by queer composers and lyricists. Performed by the Out Montclair / Union Congregational Church LGBTQ+ Pride Choir, this is another must-see, shining a bright light on the talent emerging from the greater Montclair community.

The next day – June 7 – the Montclair Pride Flag Raising will no doubt draw a crowd of community members. The choir will perform here as well, as well as local speakers and performers. The event kicks off at 5:30pm, on the corner of Church Street and Bloomfield Avenue.

But, again, that’s just a taste – because the Montclair community knows how to come together and support one another. All month long, friends, residents, and neighbors will be celebrating at planned events, from movie nights and readings to musical performances, fundraisers, and more.
