Working from Home is Changing the Home Search

Mar 19, 2019

Each day, more and more companies are announcing that they want their employees working from home, which leaves them commuting to their living rooms or local coffee shops. This is a rising trend, where currently over 20 percent of the world‘s workforce is working remotely. Amazon just announced that they are hiring over 3,000 employees to work remotely, and WeWork is officially the largest tenant of remote workers in all of NYC.

So, what does this mean for the home buyer?

It means that your Upper East Side 2-bedroom, which you have creatively been able to squeeze your three kids and Goldendoodle into, might be tough to turn into your new “Corporate HQ”. It will also be more difficult to be productive and “professional” on conference calls with kids screaming and dogs barking 10 feet away from you.

Commuting Concerns Are Over

Working from home means that your commuting concerns are gone, and you have MANY more options. Moving to the suburbs is no longer about how long is the commute but rather about the quality of life, and having a key at-home work space.

Work-from-home employees rely on technology to allow them to be remote but working from home also allows them to have a more flexible work day, which not only will foster a greater quality of life and greater productivity, but gone will be the days of mom-guilt from missing important events in your kids’ lives. We have all read the reports that suggest kids turn out better if you actually show up for them even if you just have dinner together once in awhile.
